Hess is a general contractor in the Washington Metro area that specializes in K-12 school construction. Working with them for 10+ years helped me to gain a more complete knowledge of all aspects of construction. I was able to complete many larger scale projects with my largest being the new Calvert High School. This was a phased project on an occupied campus.

Structural Preservation Systems (SPS as it was called when I was there) is a specialty contractor that focuses on a wide range of structural concrete and masonry repairs including post-tensioning work. This was the first company I worked with out of college. I worked my way up from Project Engineer to Project Manager in my 4 years there and was part of the team that performed major structural repairs to a concrete preheat tower in Colorado. The project was performed during a harsh winter and was the largest project ever performed by the company at the time. I was an Assistant Project Manager at the time and was in charge of quality control for the horizontal core drilling operation. The process included core drilling 87 feet horizontally through a concrete beam while missing embedded steel reinforcement. This project drove my desire to be part of larger, more complicated projects.
