Many of your workers are doing the job and doing it safely. The SLAM/Take 5 etc process is getting people to think about their behaviours and surroundings. However, are they prepared for major changes in that environment? You might say that Level 1 etc exercises cover it, but honestly, how often is your average worker exposed to these activities? Yes, the mine gets feedback, but that’s not like being involved. Listening at a shift meeting isn’t testing their skills. For some time now, I’ve explored this onsite and on the job. In a safe space, these challenging questions have gotten some very interesting answers. But it stimulates the topic and thinking of what would I do? The right time to correct a person’s preconceived idea is to do it before they are exposed to the hazard. Most of these hazards that I cover come around very infrequently and some people will not know if they are ready until it happens. Are your workers prepared for the unexpected?
