As process engineer for the Fluid Catalytic Cracker at Valero's Wilmington refinery, I was responsible for daily monitoring and optimization of process conditions, as well as initiating and developing long term strategic projects. Some of the projects I was responsible for include:• Initiated and coordinated FCCU catalyst reformulation ($8-10MM/yr Operating Expense). Annual benefit of reformulation estimated at $46.4MM/yr based on improved reactor product yields (15% improvement in area annual gross margin). Developed engineering decision support package and received approval from company executives as well as Refinery Leadership Team to proceed with trial of new catalyst. • Decreased consumption of costly combustion promoting catalytic additive by 65% ($596K/yr). Provided Operations with clear guidelines on injection frequency and quantity, as well as implementing shift vs. shift consumption tracking system.• Initiated, managed, and implemented a project to remove external insulation from the FCC reactor riser in response to observations of unexpected growth during an unplanned thermal cycle. Project was completed under budget, and fully mitigated the safety, environmental, and process risks associated with additional growth.
