• My research is focused on metabolic engineering of the extreme thermophiles Pyrococcus furiosus and Sulfolobus acidocaldarius for the production of bio-based fuels and chemicals.Key accomplishments:
• Designed and optimized a synthetic enzymatic pathway for high-temperature n-butanol production by heterologous expression, purification, characterization, and kinetic modeling of thermophilic enzymes.
• Engineered the hyperthermophile Pyrococcus furiosus to produce 3-hydroxypropionate, a valuable industrial chemical.
• Engineered the extreme thermoacidophile Sulfolobus acidocaldarius to oxidize elemental sulfur, the first example of metabolic engineering in an extreme thermoacidophile.
• Evaluated engineered strains of extreme thermophiles using batch or continuous fermentation, whole-genome DNA microarrays, liquid chromatography, and gas chromatography.
• Collaborated with a multi-disciplinary research team at two universities.
