The Asset Preservation group of DCAP (Design Construction & Asset Preservation) within Facilities Management is a group of specialists of varying disciplines of which I was the only structurally trained Professional Engineer. Here, I was responsible for the City of Toronto's Portfolio of buildings from a Structural (and Architectural/Building Science) aspect. As a Project Manager, I conducted 'Building Condition Assessments' to determine building deficiencies as they age and construct the budgets required to implement rehabilitative projects to maintain the portfolio's 'state of good repair'. A large component of my work was to troubleshoot specific building issues, determining if a project was warranted, acquiring Consultant through the tendering process, acting as a liaison for the City, and managing the project I've defined.The City's Facilities Management portfolio currently contains more than 600 buildings including modern building such as Metro Hall and City Hall as well as heritage buildings such as the St.Lawrence Market, St.Lawrence Hall, and Old City Hall.I was also the Facilities Management, property capital expenditure internal client liaison for both City Clerks and Long-Term Care Homes & Services. This duty encompasses channeling communication regarding all aspects of these clients' property capital expenditure plans and any 'state of good repair' performance issues that arise.

My work with RJC was generally from the prime consultant project position and hence project management and documentation was geared towards a more complete package including minor civil, building science, mechanical and electrical specification assembly. Structural building review and subsequent technical report authoring occupied a notable portion of my working day. My main technical tasks were remedial repairs, restoration of aging concrete parking decks, various types of building additions and building condition assessments for a variety of clients. In the Building Science and Restoration Department, I was their main in-house structural resource after the managing principal.

I was able to gain more design experience regarding multi-story concrete design at QDA. From the beginning emphases was placed on furthering my experience with design software and Code design detail. This practice began during the design phase of a 55 million dollar multi-story building in Brampton of which I later became the primary contact during the construction phase lasting the full course of my tenure. Structural engineering work related to this project included problem solving in coordination with the Contractor and other Consultants, investigational work as to the affects of construction on surrounding buildings and the review of change order pricing. After two years I was delegated design work on a three component $80-100 million project slated for Scotia Plaza (Toronto), my component of which was a five story structure over the north canopy. It was designed in coordination with the Trump tower to help them with staging space for their construction. The project was cancelled during the economic crisis of 2008 with approximately 80% of the design complete.During my time at QDA several new junior employees were hired and I was given the leeway to train them in certain minor engineering roles and later was able to delegate some of my smaller managerial and technical tasks to them.

As a recent graduate I began work at BAA providing technical designs for minor structurally related change orders associated with WalMart building designs across Canada. Within a few months, my training for full building site adaptation (design) was underway, starting with roof design then columns and finally grade level work and foundations. Drafting, shop drawing review and small amounts of organizational management were inherent in my experience. Other ‘box building’ design involvement as either a main designer or through a more supportive design roll ensued. In my final year at BAA I was working closely with A&P Canada on many renovation projects. This work included site investigation, design development meetings, technical design and construction review.
