My background in the creative arts in combination with my varied experience with electronics (academically and providing services) and legal qualifications places me in a unique position for bridging the often complicated and difficult to navigate gap between creators/inventors and intellectual property. My day to day work involves matters related to patent prosecution before the EPO and the UKIPO. I am also actively involved with clients in invention harvesting, patent drafting. I have a background in electronic engineering, with experience in the music industry and semiconductor/MEMS/NEMS device design, fabrication and testing. My love for electronics was borne out of a desire to design/build and repair music equipment. Fueled with an enthusiasm to learn, I set off to Glasgow University to study a combined honors degree in Electronics with Music (BEng). In parallel with my undergraduate studies, I ran a workshop building and repairing equipment for my colleagues in the music industry, also working from time to time as a touring backline technician.Through the BEng, I developed a deeper understanding of analogue and digital electronic circuits and signal processing in addition to new skills such as acoustics and software engineering. As a PhD student I researched and developed polycrystalline diamond micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) for passive micro-rheology and piezoresistive sensor applications. Diamond is radiation hard and is a prime candidate material for space applications. I have extensive device fabrication experience including process development, having spent three years training and operating in the James Watt Nano-fabrication Centre at the University of Glasgow. Upon completion of my PhD I left Scotland to train as a patent attorney with a prominent South East IP Law firm, including gaining a postgraduate certificate in intellectual property law from Queen Mary University London. I returned to Scotland in 2023 to join Murgitroyd and as of 2024, I am a fully qualified European Patent Attorney.
