Working within the optimization team at JP Morgan AI research, using advanced AI techniques to solve business problems.

Alongside my PhD I worked as a lab demonstrator within the Department of Computer and Information Sciences. This involved tutoring in a range of classes including: Foundations of AI, AI for Autonomous Systems, Reasoning for Intelligent Agents, Big Data Technologies and Quantitative Methods in AI. As well as improving my explanatory communication skills it introduced me to a broader range of topics in AI and data science.

The Column Generation method is a technique for solving challenging optimization problems with a massive number of variables. It decomposes the problem into two problems which are then solved iteratively: the restricted master problem solves the original problem using a subset of the variables, while the column generation problem finds the best new variable to add. In this thesis, I applied column generation in a novel way to solve two optimization problems in the field of planning and scheduling: the first is a well-known telecommunication planning problem for 5G networks, while the latter involves scheduling a sequence of actions under correlated temporal uncertainty.

Secured funding as part of the SICSA, Emerging Researcher Program to undertake a research visit to Ericsson AI Research. In a 5G network, internet service providers face the challenge of delivering tailored services to customers. Each service is a request to route and process traffic through a sequence of network functions (e.g. load balancer, firewall) running on servers in the network. In this project, I developed a column generation based algorithm capable of placing network functions within the network, while routing traffic through the required components in an optimal way. The resulting publication won the best paper award at the 2023 International Workshop on Resilient Networks Design and Modelling.

Employed fluid network analysis software, to perform systems level design and analysis for the air system, fuel system and oil and heat management system on the Rolls-Royce Trent line of civil aero-engines. Involved coordinating as part of a large international, multidisciplinary team to produce high quality analysis on safety critical problems. Performing Monte-Carlo analysis on the engine to assess the probability of annulus ingestion at the High Pressure Turbine rim is one such example.

Worked temporarily as a production worker in a fast-paced laundry service factory implementing a hardworking and reliable attitude to ensure that production targets are met daily.

Whilst at university I also worked part time as an events steward with G4S. During my time in this role I have had the privilege to work at many high profile events such as the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the 2018 Glasgow European Championships. The high profile nature of some of the events required me to utilise excellent customer service skills whilst also maintaining a highly professional attitude.

Took part in an internship organised through the IAESTE (International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience) program. I worked alongside the professor and fellow Masters students utilising ANSYS Fluent to perform computational fluid dynamics analysis in the Laboratory of Aero and Hybrid Energy Systems. This project helped develop my cooperative skills working as part of a larger engineering team.

My main duties involved working as part of a small engineering team in daily tasks on the Ormsary Estates renewable energy assets. These assets include a 13MW hydro-power farm on the Ormsary Estate alongside a 2MW plant on the Isle of Jura. Typical duties involved performing maintenance on critical components such as the turbines, bearings and pipelines. During my time there I also learned about maintenance activities involved in the Allt Dearg Community Wind Farm located on the estate.
