As an Engineering Intern at the Monroe County Department of Transportation I worked under the Highway & Bridge Engineering and Traffic Signal Engineering divisions, completing tasks as follows:- Collaborated with Transportation Project Managers and another intern to assess and document structural deficiencies in over 500 bridges and culverts, directly influencing maintenance funding optimization. - Conduct loading analyses on overloaded traffic signal mast arms using an Excel model, evaluating structural risks and recommending load reductions.- Developed a Smartsheet system to streamline asset tracking for local towns and allow for smooth exchange of equipment. - Recorded and updated storm sewer information, including outfall inspections, using an existing GIS system. - Supported TPMs during construction site assessments, progress meetings, Capital improvement planning meetings, and pre-construction meetings, expanding my understanding of project management.I really enjoyed working in this role and I learned many valuable things about project management and the decision process as an engineer.

As a Transportation Construction Inspector for the NYS Department of Transportation I was responsible for ensuring a bridge substructure repair project proceeded according to project plans and DOT standards.As part of this experience I kept daily documentation of work progress, materials, manpower, equipment, and work-site incidents, while also testing concrete for correct air and slump readings prior to pour. Furthermore, my position required me to communicate between DOT and contractor personnel on a daily basis. This opportunity gave me insight in how projects are conducted in an industry setting, including the emphasis on documentation, communication, and quality control.
