I have 19 years of experience, initially in biomedical informatics research, and then software/database engineering (including 11 years at Director level) in academic medical center environments. I am a hands-on leader because I believe the details of software architecture, design, and implementation are critical to realizing a technical vision that impacts the organization. At the same time, I strongly believe in pushing day-to-day decision-making down the org chart as much as possible, empowering my teams to achieve their own success. Despite developing internally used software, my teams take a product-oriented approach to software development, treating our users as customers. In my current role as Director of Research Informatics at Huntsman Cancer Institute, I oversee software and database development, implementation, and support for all aspects of the institute's research mission. I also oversee vendor system selections and implementations, and integration of vendor systems with locally developed tools. Thus far in my career, my teams have primarily been Java and Angular shops building web-based applications with multiple database backends (relational and noSQL). We increasingly use Python and Amazon Web Services. Highlights of my career include several data intensive information management systems supporting healthcare research, and data abstraction systems using various approaches (hybrid rule-based/machine learning).
