New international building design & research initiative for hot climates.ARC: architecture, resilience, community- Research & Collaboration- Pilot Projects- Volunteer Expert Group- Knowledge & Skills ExchangeAndrew Simmonds is an ‘environment-conscious’ architectural designer working since 1991 with Architect, Adele Mills as Simmonds.Mills architect.builders. His experience covers historic & contemporary buildings, innovative/traditional materials & the development of energy efficiency building solutions. Simmonds.Mills design domestic & non-domestic projects to AECB CarbonLite, Passivhaus & EnerPHit Standards and have completed many successful and certified Passivhaus buildings. His1869 family home in Hereford is the first UK retrofit certified to the EnerPHit Standard - monitored to check performance & fabric condition since 2010. He led the development of AECB energy performance standards and design and construction guidance, initiated the CarbonLite Training Centre and developed educational materials as well as the Low Energy Buildings Database. He led the team supporting the Technology Strategy Board’s ‘Retrofit for the Future’ competition, & with AECB colleagues, set up the UK Passivhaus Trust in 2010. With developer Tim Martel he collaborated in the development of the lifetime-carbon building modelling tool, PHribbon, and with colleagues continues to explore ways to reduce the upfront and lifetime carbon emissions of buildings.His approach to design and construction projects is informed by the idea that Sufficiency + Efficiency = Sustainability: a resource-efficient, socially and environmentally responsible approach aka 'radical simplicity'. He is currently researching and deploying a stepped approach to high performance buildings for challenging socio-economic contexts in cooling-dominated countries, whilst integrating landscape design to increase thermal comfort, biodiversity, food and fibre yield, and health and wellbeing.Andrew Simmonds was part time CEO of the Association for Environment Conscious Building (AECB) 2005 - 2024/25.
