Capabilities included full upstream and downstream processing assets, supporting both microbial, insect cell, live virus and mammalian expression systems.From its inception in 2011 through its sale in December 2014, Kalon was awarded close to $90million in contracts for the development and manufacturing of vaccines for cancer, influenza and infectious diseases. These contracts included Kalon's participation in the Center for Innovation in Advanced Development and Manufacturing, a national center formed through a contract between the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the Texas A&M University System. The Center presently serves as one of the nation's first lines of defense to the next influenza pandemic and emerging biological threats such as west nile virus, dengue fever, SARS, etc. Kalon also entered into a long-term agreement with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center to serve as its provider of biologics process development, scale up and clinical supply manufacturing.In December 2014, Kalon was sold to jointly owned subsidiary of FUJIFILM Corporation and Mitsubishi Corporation and was renamed FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies Texas, LLC. The sale of Kalon, a university start-up, was one of the most significant of its kind given the significant commitment to Texas and growth of the biotech industry in the state.
