I was the medic in charge of over 100 clinical trials before being Medical Director at ReGen Therapeutics. The experience taught me to distinguish good research from bad and promising projects from duds. Regen had 2 outstanding projects in Alzheimer's and Stroke recovery, remarkable because both are safe, worked well in a clinical trial, meet enormous un-met needs and are free from competition. However, ReGen ran out of cash so I now work pro-bono on the projects due to their enormous potential to help millions of people. The Alzheimer's project, called Colostrinin(R) has worked well in models of the mechanisms of Alzheimer's, from the genetic and anti-oxidant levels to senescence-prone mice. The stroke and brain damage project, the GABA agonist zolpidem, makes apparently dead areas of the brain, ie infarctions, function again, whereas most medics believe that infarctions are irretrievably dead. Dozens of stroke patients have recovered speech and muscle function, vegetative state patients have recovered consciousness. Before Regen I ran my own Phase 1 & 2 company in the NHS hospital at Guildford. We had innovative models of pain in volunteers and patients. At Beecham I ran a Phase 1 unit researching novel anti-emetics and to measure their effect I invented a non-invasive method for measuring gastric emptying. It is like the stomach's equivalent of the well-known ECG (EKG in the US) for the heart since it shows gastric contractions just like the ECG shows each heartbeat. The University of Surrey made several prototypes that worked very well in diagnosing gastric problems. It has made me invent a whole new theory about the way our stomachs recognise the components in meals so it can release the correct digestive enzymes.
