    • Investigated oxygen reduction to water performed by heme-copper oxidase enzymes, employing a range of spectroscopic techniques (including magnetic circular dichroism, electron paramagnetic resonance, UV-Vis, Resonance Raman), as well as computational methods (density functional theory)• Studied the reactivity and chemical properties of heme, copper, and heme-copper model complexes to understand oxygen reduction by these mono- and bimetallic systems, in a collaboration with the research group of Prof. Kenneth Karlin at Johns Hopkins University• Defined computationally two possible mechanisms of phenol-induced O–O bond cleavage in a heme-Cu-peroxo complex, and determined the active mechanism by experimentally evaluating the computational predictions• Identified and characterized pH-dependent behavior in ubiquinol oxidase from E. coli, applied the findings to determine optimal conditions for stabilizing key catalytic intermediates in heme-copper oxidases, and worked closely with a postdoc to maximize yields and characterize these intermediates• Worked with a visiting post-doc (nine months) to spectroscopically investigate oxygen reduction by two synthetic homogeneous catalysts (one with a dicopper active site, one with a tricopper active site)
