Associate ScientistStealth Mode Biotech May 2024 - PresentSevenoaks, GbBiophysical characterization of drug candidates -
Research ScientistArizona State University Apr 2023 - Apr 2024Tempe, Az, UsFocused on researching extracellular electron uptake by photosynthetic anaerobic bacteria, to understand and develop new mechanisms for harnessing the potential energy stored in abiotic minerals to fuel life. Work is associated with Department of Energy and NASA research exploring novel methods in biological energy formation and the origins of life on Earth.Responsible for project design, lab management & operations, and team management. -
Postdoctoral FellowBoston University Jan 2018 - Apr 2023Boston, Ma, UsResearch focused on metal-containing enzymes found in bacteria that are responsible for the interconversion between CO2 and key metabolic molecules such as pyruvate. These enzymes can reduce CO2 at low over potentials (i.e. little wasted energy), and our aim is to study at atomic resolution the process by which reduction of CO2 occurs. Understanding this process can better guide the engineering and design of catalysts that convert CO2 to usable biofuels. In my research, I express my proteins recombinantly in E. coli, and purify the expressed protein in anaerobic Coy chambers using FPLC systems. I then use kinetic, electrochemical, and spectroscopic techniques to understand the chemical mechanism, reactivity, and molecular interactions at the catalytic site of the enzyme during CO2 binding and reduction to pyruvate. Subsequent studies will use this information to design and tune the enzyme for better catalytic efficiency. -
Graduate StudentCarnegie Mellon University Aug 2011 - Dec 2017Pittsburgh, Pa, UsCharacterization of the structure and reactivity of metallocofactors in enzymes and synthetic catalysts, specializing in kinetic and spectroscopic analysis. Specialized in enzyme kinetics, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, synchrotron, and other structural biology spectroscopic techniques. -
Staff ScientistUniversity Of Pittsburgh Graduate School Of Public Health May 2010 - Jul 2011Pittsburgh, Pa, UsStudied the biochemical mechanism of cyanide toxicity in the human respiratory chain, and how nitric oxide an other antidotes can counteract the inhibition of key enzymes by cyanide. Performed enzyme purification, kinetics assays, and magnetic resonance-based spectroscopic techniques to study the interactions between nitric oxide, cyanide, and mammalian enzymes in the mitochondrial respiratory chain.
