SilviaTerra uses advanced cloud analytics and satellite imagery to improve forest management with data on tree species presence and diameter distribution. I developed new business models and launched pilots that pushed the technology beyond the existing customer base such as extending the methods to important international forestry regions, merchandizing the data to wood and paper mills, and also incorporating the data in holistic forest management in Native American reservations and associations of family owned forest lands.

  • Amazon Conservation Association
Research Project Manager - Soil Health
Amazon Conservation Association May 2013 - Aug 2015
    Washinton, Dc, Us
I managed a project researching the potential for using biochar (charcoal) to achieve higher agricultural productivity and carbon sequestration in the Peruvian Amazon. The project involved assembly, transport, and installation of a biochar oven, construction of a processing facility and also community outreach for sourcing raw materials. Work environment was highly unstructured with many uncommon challenges without prescribed solutions. Successes to date include the installation of experimental parcels with 3 important tropical crops and the use of biochar in reforesting mercury contaminated illegal gold mines in Madre de Dios state. Total project budget was over a quarter million dollars which was provided through a grant from the Blue Moon Fund. I was also responsible for organizing a conference in August 2015 with the Peruvian Ministry of the Environment in which we disseminated our results and recruited Peruvian agricultural and forestry businesses that implemented this technology.
  • The Complete Leaf Company Ltd
    Founder And President
The Complete Leaf Company Ltd May 2010 - Feb 2013
Complete Leaf was a specialty herbal product importer and distributor and the home of Yerba Mate Buds. Yerba Mate Buds were crafted using artisanal Chinese green tea processing methodology. At the height of production, the company was working with dozens of Paraguayan yerba mate farmers implementing agroforestry production techniques. Collaborated closely with World Wildlife Fund Paraguay to start a yerba mate/native species tree nursery. Launching Complete Leaf involved extensive market research and content development for the website, blog, and packaging. Successes included the planning, construction, and operation of a small yerba mate factory, coordination of 3 harvests, and entry to the market through sales to Harney & Sons Fine Teas and Upton Tea Imports.
  • Thompson Finch Farms
    Farm Apprentice
Thompson Finch Farms Apr 2012 - Nov 2012
I spent a full growing season working on an organic farm that produced strawberries, apples, potatoes, and mixed vegetables. This was a valuable experience that rooted my thinking on agriculture in an on-the-ground reality. I was able to do this because of a coup in Paraguay that disrupted government function and delayed shipment of the Complete Leaf yerba mate buds for almost a year. Refusal to pay bribes to new ministry officials was ultimately what resulted in such an extensive delay. Some of the skills and knowledge I acquired during the season on the farm included crop rotation and cover crops, integrated pest management, precision agriculture, growing in protected environments, use of various farm machines, and the relative strengths and weaknesses of different agricultural sales channels.
  • Peace Corps
    Rural Economic Development Promoter
    Peace Corps May 2007 - Oct 2009
    Washington, District Of Columbia, Us
I was assigned to work primarily with a Yerba Mate Cooperative in Alto Parana, Paraguay. My first project was to apply for a $5,000 USAID grant to rebuild the burnt down yerba mate factory. In so doing, we were able to raise production over five fold from the baseline. I was also involved with secondary projects such as assisting local tomato farmers in bringing their product to market, a women's group to implement improved poultry practices, and a tree nursery that eventually produced well over 10,000 yerba mate and other tree species. I was active in the community and frequently worked with the school and the health post.
