I spent the first 12 months of my time as Process Leader working in the Underbody area of Discovery BIW. I was responsible for 46 associates and Group Leaders and spent much of my time working closely with the Senior Production Leader at strategies and plans to produce the required number of vehicles to the required quality standard.In April I moved to the Closures section in Discovery BIW and I was responsible for 26 associates and 2 Group Leaders.During that time my section was regularly audited successfully for quality and compliance by IPS.

As shift coordinator on nightshift in Discovery BIW I was responsible for the monitoring of all the production areas with regards to cycle times and breakdowns. It was my responsibility to ensure timely attendance of maintenance personnel to all breakdowns and monitor areas of overcycling. I had to request information from the various Group Leaders regarding the breakdowns to be able to produce a daily report at the end of each shift documenting the amount of lost time and the reasons for the production losses working closely with the Senior Production Leader.

I have worked as Group Leader, mostly in Powertrain operations and more latterly in Discovery BIW since 1995 in all departments of Powertrain operations including heat treatment. I spent most of that time working in the differential and gearbox sections and have a very good understanding of what is required to produce, inspect and build both of those products to a high standard. Also during that time I was promoted to the position of Process Leader in 1998 and successfully completed a short period of assessment. This was ended when Powertrain was placed on a single shift and I was returned as a Group Leader in 1999. I continued to work in Powertrain until it was eventually outsourced in 2012 when I moved into Discovery BIW as a Group Leader in Underbodies.

I started working for the company now known as Jaguar Land Rover in 1989 working in Driveline Systems as a general machine operator and spent most of my time working on manufacturing gearbox cases for the Defender, Discovery and Range Rover vehicles. I gained a lot of experience in operating and setting large machines which produced the gearbox casings, clutch housings and their associated parts.

I was a member of a small group of people who's job it was to produce small batch sizes and one off's components for the aircraft engine industry. This involved the use of capstan lathes, centre lathes,milling machines, drilling machines, engraving machines and electro plating.The work was very interesting and intricate and developed the skills learned during my apprenticeship.

I completed a four year indentured apprenticeship at Alvis in Coventry undergoing training in all areas engineering. I completed 3 modules during my time as an apprentice and attended North Warwickshire College in Nuneaton, successfully completing my City and Guilds qualification.Alvis, a part of the British Leyland Group, were manufacturers of fighting vehicles, tanks, and aero engines.
