Led a blended squad based in London, Peterborough and Poland, comprising up to 11 engineers, including an SDET and spanning apprentice to senior levels. Utilised Node.js on an event-driven microservices architecture in AWS to maintain eight back-end services, which included the management of tens of millions of customer marketing preferences and orchestrating the deletion of customer data to comply with the GDPR.We inherited a front-end C# / jQuery web application built for our customer services team that required IIS and .NET Framework to run. I recruited two developers to bring in React.js skills, enabling us to create a modern replacement (with separate front- and back-end services), conforming to our new design system. We were then able to switch off the legacy application.As EM, I was responsible for ‘the how’, ‘the when’ and ‘the who’; our technical product manager looked after ‘the what’ and ‘the why’. Reporting into the head of technology, I was part of the director of engineering’s extended leadership team.Duties included:• Managing incidents, co-ordinating with multiple stakeholders from across the business.• Establishing and improving ways of working and co-ordinating sprint ceremonies. Ensuring all work was logged in Jira, enabling us to track progress and monitor lead times / cycle times.• Assessing, breaking down and estimating new work. Setting monthly milestones and presenting at cross-squad quarterly planning sessions.• Agreeing architecture designs and presenting them to the company’s staff engineers. Consulting with principal and staff engineers on solutions and best practice.• Ensuring we were up to date with immunisation (e.g. load tests, runbook checks, vulnerability scans and rate limiting) including the monitoring of our service alerts.• Holding regular one-to-ones with direct reports plus mid- and end-of-year reviews. Setting objectives and helping staff develop their careers. Managing the relationship with our nearshore partner.

The organisation created a new Technology directorate with new roles, including product managers, and I now led a new, enlarged Applications Development team. My 'team of teams' comprised 17 permanent roles, including QA/testers, at senior, mid and junior levels. Team members were then assigned to a product-based Agile work stream with a product manager, web operations staff and, later, a user research expert. As part of the technology management team, I worked on a digital transformation strategy and managed my own budget.

Promoted to manager of the team, reporting to the head of ICT. As well as software development, duties now included the weekly assignment and reporting of projects and work requests, as well as hiring new team members. • Ensured all source code for all projects was moved to a single location, using the same system (TFS).• Co-designed a replacement authentication/authorisation system to allow users to log in and gain access to content. This faster system replaced an expensive commercial product that needed constant restarts.• Managed production efficiency work to improve our Publishing processes, using three-week ‘sprints’.• Built a public-facing chemistry events listing system, with a responsive web design created by the in-house team, coded using MVC with C# / SQL Server by our offshore team, following Agile principles.• Migrated the websites for our print magazines to a new design on a new platform.• Visited our offshore team in Mumbai to help maintain a good supplier relationship.• Maintained our online Membership application, amending HTML/CSS/JavaScript, adding ASP.NET sections to the existing Classic ASP. Fixed all red-flag security issues highlighted by scanning tool.• Worked on the regeneration of our corporate website, helping to scope the work and select the external agency and our new CMS.

Developed and supported bespoke solutions for internal clients. Introduced the team to ASP.NET Webforms-based applications and worked on migrating from ColdFusion. Also maintained the many parts of the RSC’s public-facing ASP-based website. Duties included assessment, specification and implementation of projects and required liaising with staff at all levels of the business.

In addition to previous duties, led a team of two programmers, developing a new Windows client/server application in Delphi. In 2003 B&C started work on a Windows version of its Unix product using Visual Studio and SQL Server. Other responsibilities and experience included the creation of web interfaces for existing desktop applications in Classic ASP and, later, ASP.NET.

Reporting directly to the managing director, helped develop and support B&C’s main application, a Unix-based management costing/charging tool aimed primarily at Local Government. Worked with the company’s proprietary RDBMS and also trained courses in its report generation languages.
