Crisis negotiation is a part-time task force within the Police Department. There are hours of training and certifications involved in order to be a member of the crisis negotiation team. Members of the team are expected to be on call one week out of the month. Once called, a negotiation team responds to high risk situations that can involve hostages, drugs, suicide risks, and a myriad of other issues. The situations require members to implement their training to effectively resolve conflict without violence.

The primary responsibility of the school resource officer is the safety and the security of the school.This entails conducting multiple investigations including: larcenies, sexual assault, drugs, missing persons, internet crimes, terrorism, child pornography, child abuse, and mediation. This requires the school resource officer to have effective communication skills, be organized, detailed report writing, testify in court and be informed on both juvenile and adult codes of law. In addition, the school resource officer is responsible for organizing security personnel during extracurricular activities.

As team leader of the crisis negotiation team the expectation is to lead and manage the response team during high-risk situations. The team leader is responsible for knowing the logistics of the situation, who is responsible for what task, and ensuring that members of the team are well-informed throughout the crisis. The leader is the liaison between the crisis negotiation team and the upper brass to keep all parties informed of the developing situation.
