My PhD research considered the development and application of a novel method of panoramic optical mapping in the intact rabbit heart. Using this imaging technique, the electrical activity over the epicardial surface of the heart could be mapped. In the course of my research I have studied a range of different physiological and pathophysiological paradigm’s, in relation to their effects on cardiac electrophysiology. These include: hypothermia, acute ischemia, chronic myocardial infarction and forms of cardiac pacing (e.g. Bi-ventricular pacing). Better understanding of these phenomenon undoubtedly presents important clinical implications for optimising treatment and care of patients.
