About Andrew Anselmo
In addition to my regular engineering work, I also volunteer at Artisan's Asylum (Electronics and Robotics) as a shop lead and instructor. The integration of controls, sensors, actuators, and associated hardware is incredibly fun, and is always interesting. I also help artists with kinetic art and sculpture projects, and have taught them a few tricks in keeping their projects documented and easy to work on. Additionally, I do a bit of origami, and have been a street performer and instructor for many years. I've designed a few novel and original origami models, and have also made classic moving (kinetic) origami pieces out of metal. Origami is generally considered an art, but there is quite a bit of mathematics behind it.

Role listed
Lead Principal Software Controls Engineer
Principal Software Controls Engineer
Principal Engineer
Engineering consulting for a variety of government and private firms. Core competencies:• Architecture and engineering of cost-effective systems and controls• Data acquisition and design of good experimental protocols• Human machine interfaces• Sensor design and selectionDetails on some of my previous projects:• Designed and developed integrated data acquisition systems, control systems, and data management architectures, for systems as diverse as portable sensor systems to industrial production equipment.• Worked with startup firms that needed quick turnarounds and cost-effective solutions.• Developed automated reporting systems, reducing production time for report generation by over 85%, creating unified documents 'on the fly' from a variety of data sources.• Converted ultra high vacuum manual valve and pump systems for a semiconductor R&D laboratory to automatic operation, covering all aspects of the design, coding, HMI selection, wiring and installation.• Analyzed physical models proposed by clients using basic analytical techniques and numerical simulations. • Researched methods and proposed vendors/tools for measuring band gap and other basic material properties using NDT based on client needs.• Worked with a startup firm involved in improving combustion, measuring combustion gas composition and temperatures, and aided in design of prototype test configurations.• Specified controls architecture and components for a new long duration Bridgman crystal growth furnace, involving motion and temperature control, data logging and remote access. Wrote and tested integrated programs for Eurotherm HMI and temperature hardware; components connected via Modbus and RS-485 serial lines.• Been involved in the DOE loan guarantee program, performing due diligence on new photovoltaic manufacturing technologies, analyzing new manufacturing techniques and plant layouts.
Principal Controls Engineer
Worked with PLCs and HMIs, of course, as well as a host of other high tech instruments and sensors. Built the control and data acquisition systems for the floating silicon method (FSM). Have also built custom analysis and measurement tools. Built a custom facilities monitoring system, managing backup power, cooling systems, and process gases. Mentored multiple interns, and managed external contractors.
Senior Controls Engineer
Director Of Automation
Director of Automation at BrightSpot Automation LLC, a product company producing industrial equipment to the photovoltaics industry.Built, tested, debugged, and documented common core code, interface and data storage systems for a variety of machines used in the photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing industry and research laboratories. Solutions used a hybrid of PLCs (B&R), PCs, Python OpenCV image processing, C#/VB .NET, and industrial vision systems, as well as single board computers and microcontrollers for custom field-capable test equipment, ranging from hand-held units to trailer-sized quality control equipment.Created custom, crosstool scripting for machine control and automation. Worked with research institutions to develop unique test equipment and low cost sensors. Specified and monitored subcontractor work.Worked with contract manufacturing firms to outsource build of equipment, and also went through a rigorous testing process for one of Brightspot's products (LoadSpot) for official CE certification via a third party, including EM emissions.
Member, Technical Staff
Responsible for design, development, troubleshooting and maintenance of the control systems for the Quad String Ribbon furnace, the core technology of the company. Was also responsible for the control and data systems for the previous 'Gemini' (dual ribbon) and single string ribbon furnaces.• Worked closely with MIT Professor Ely Sachs (inventor of ‘String Ribbon’ process) in developing next generation “Quad” furnace controls, sensors and system, proof of concept to prototype in six months.• Lead member responsible for new Quad furnace control architecture/SCADA, program structure, documentation, and human-machine interface (HMI) layout, expanding from three research systems to 400 production machines. Wrote specifications for production equipment, and aggressively interviewed possible suppliers. Delays in transferring new processes from R&D to production were eliminated by using a common controls platform and structure, limiting software releases. Flexible design allowed two different vendor options in a new critical but costly subsystem, allowing purchasing department to negotiate over 20% reduction in pricing, allowing sourcing redundancy and reducing overall cost by 5%.• Specified, designed, and built customized printed circuit boards (PCBs) for interfacing programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and sensors, to solve process control problems without expensive third-party solutions. • Designed and built very low-cost, easy to use, custom test fixtures and systems for measuring thickness, velocity, temperature, and mass flow in order to rapidly calibrate and test production equipment.• Performed low-level controls tuning; configured control systems to decrease unsteady and less productive startup time from 24 to 4 hours, resulting in 7.5% absolute increase in output.• Oversaw outside hardware vendors and software consultants, ensuring subcontracted work was done to specification and on time, and in parallel with main thrust of in-house work.
Process Development Scientist
Responsible for sensor development and controls for crystal growth systems and other prototype factory elements.• Created, built, and tested first fully automatic, self-calibrating, “String Ribbon” thickness measurement and control system, eliminating manual control. Configured to be self-tuning and self-diagnosing to eliminate operator input.• Designed workflow for future factory, easily scaling and adapting when original machines doubled output. Excellence and foresight in design allowed basic system to be used for over eight years.• Created and implemented first automated data acquisition and reporting systems for new factory. Created new systems to replace error-prone paper methods, allowing modern dating mining techniques to be used in improving productivity and finding problems.• Integrated and assimilated a wide variety of controllers, motion control system software and hardware into existing production systems. Recognized as the “on call” site expert for many various computer control, interface design, and data acquisition projects throughout the company.
