Critical Perspectives on Education - EDUC 1000In this course we read about and discuss the relationship between schooling, social structures, communities, and individuals.Particular attention was paid to the role of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, immigration status, and other factors in the nature of those relationships. We reflected on both scholarly research and popular conceptions of schools, students, educators, and policymakers. Through a multidisciplinary lens (e.g., history, anthropology, sociology, political science, philosophy) we will engage in the following questions: Are there official and unofficial purpose(s) of schooling? Why do diverse groups of students experience schooling differently? Do schools reproduce or interrupt inequality? Both? Neither? Can schools be sites for social justice? In sum, the key question of this course is: “How can a critical understanding of the relationship between school and society help us challenge educational inequality to create more inclusive, effective, culturally relevant/sustaining and pedagogically strong schools?”
