In this role Bauer Custom Media regularly commissions me to write and/or create a mix of content underpinning B2B marketing strategies for its telco, internet, e-commerce, airline and other technology clients. This included Telstra, PayPal and Qantas. The commissions ranged from customer stories, case studies, news writing and thought leadership to company and brand ambassador profiles, and remote assignments requiring me to engage videographers. It required me to interview hundreds of business owners from across a diverse range of industries to tell their stories.

This position required me to straddle dual roles as editor of the online version of The Australian’s technology section, Australian IT, and senior technology journalist.This required me to keep up with the daily demands of managing the website, reporting for the weekly print edition of the section and for other sections of the newspaper as required, including Business, Media and general news. Keeping pace in the online news environment required me to write accurate, high-quality, exclusive news rapidly and produce a daily online newsletter. It also required me to coordinate with other sections of the paper to share and cross-publish content. I also monitored wires services for relevant stories to include in our digest.The requirements of this role included:- Copy editing, fact-checking and headline writing- Sourcing and researching original, high impact news stories- Business reporting, including company results and major announcements- Writing technology features - Court and parliamentary reporting - Managing the curation and distribution of a daily online newsletter- Working to tight deadlinesThe position also required periodic travel to major technology news events hosted around Australia and international destinations, including Berlin, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Japan, Las Vegas and New Zealand.

In this role I gathered and reported technology business news stories for ZDNet Australia and its syndicated CNet and ZDNet branded sites throughout Asia, Europe and North America. My reports and investigative work frequently led daily news agendas across these publications and were followed by counterparts in the Australian mainstream press. Notably, I conducted a series of investigative reports into the conduct of a mobile handset manufacturer that prompted local and US regulators to action against the company to secure compensation for consumers valued in the tens of millions of dollars. I also delivered many scoops on mass redundancies at local division of major multinational tech companies, the development of broadband in Australia, online piracy and the strategic direction of other internationally recognised digital brands.These reports played an important role establishing ZDNet’s reputation as a leading brand in the Australian technology publishing sector.The requirements of this role included:- Sourcing and researching original, high impact news stories- Lead investigative reports- Business reporting, including company results and major announcements- Fact-checking and headline writing- Working to tight daily deadlines
