Dr Andrew Back has held research fellowships and visiting scientist positions in Australia, the USA, and Japan. He founded a private computational finance company with international bank clients operating on the NYSE and CBOE. Dr. Back has published in numerous journals and authored several book chapters. Since 2017 he has been with The University of Queensland, most recently as an Adjunct Assoc Professor and Advance Queensland Research Fellow within the Trusted Autonomous Systems Defence CRC, and previously with the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language developing AI for detecting neurological conditions from conversation analysis. He is currently developing synthetic language AI. ORCID 0000-0001-5474-1910The question of how to build more efficient AI is a topic of considerable interest. Do we build ever more complex models requiring larger amounts of data? I suggest that this pathway is not sustainable of feasible. It is reminiscent of the 1920s-1940s race to build faster cars by using ever larger engines. it gets you only so far, but in the end these models collapse. What is required is a better model, not more data. I have been working on a new paradigm for AI where the basis is no longer recognition, but understanding stories and narratives. The concept is that everything is language! Behavior is integrated within the model directly. This work is enabling AI models aimed at understanding trends, behavioral changes and deeper issues than is usually possible with current machine learning techniques. Recently we have developed AI models capable of detecting underlying neurological conditions by analyzing real-time conversation, translating biological agent behavior into human language equivalent, identifying underlying characteristics of dialogs, authorship classification and more - all without prior learning.
