I am a Lecturer in the Department of American Studies and an affiliate Lecturer in the Department of Media & Communication Studies. My research interests include the history and sociology of race in the United States, urban studies, the history of Baltimore, popular music and film studies, carceral studies, American religious nationalism and extremism, and media subcultures.I proudly hail from a non-traditional background, having spent most of my career outside of academia. Before joining the department in 2022, I served as a public high school art teacher, a technology instructor at a nonpublic high school for students with developmental disabilities, a program administrator at a Baltimore City elementary/middle school, and the leader of a school inside of a maximum security prison in Jessup, Maryland. Patuxent Institution Prison

As Teacher Supervisor, I managed all school aspects of running a school inside of a maximum security prison. My accomplishments include:• Assessing and improving procedures for operations, communications, enrollment, staffing, technology, and procurement.• Training teachers and inmate workers in cultural competency and equity, leading to noted improvement in school climate and student achievement.• Crafting and implementing a data-driven school improvement plan.• Doubled the amount of students earning their GED from the previous full school year.• Raising $2K in a crowdsourced fundraiser to provide books for inmates.As a Correctional Educator, I designed and taught an integrated English and social studies curricula in adult education (GED) classes.

My accomplishments include:• Deploying and managing over 900 pieces of school-based technology• Leading staff to innovatively integrate technology into the K-8 setting• Crafting and enforcing staff and student tech policies and procedures • Improving online communication to families and stakeholders by creating new website and managing social media accounts• Writing over 40 public news stories celebrating the great work happening in the school• Supervising a full-time assistant and two undergraduate interns
