I am an organic chemist, currently as a PhD candidate at the University of California, San Francisco. My first research experiences were looking at the beauty of nature and the small bioactive molecules produced by nature. The time in the Gerwick lab showed me how nature has built in chemical mechanisms we take advantage of for medicine. This inspired me to look at how the bioactive molecules we take today are made as an intern at Merck. Through the pandemic at Merck I worked on developing chemical suggestions for improving drug permeability and then explored new chemical methodology to be used to design new drugs. In my PhD work I am currently building my synthetic chemistry literacy and skill set as I study chemical inhibition of protein synthesis in bacteria and mammalian cells through the complex synthesis of natural products.
