Founder And Chief NerdListen Money Matters Dec 2012 - PresentHoboken, New Jersey, UsAfter many conversations with friends and co-workers I came to the conclusion that a scary amount of highly educated people haven't the slightest clue how to properly manage their money. It isn't because the topic is difficult but because it simply isn't taught in school. As a result I created Listen Money Matters a website and podcast that teaches people how to mange their money in an approachable way.Besides writing articles, planning and recording podcast episodes I also do a significant amount of development, design and A/B testing. Due to the needs of the business we've created many plugin improvements to Wordpress that help us organize what we've created as well as monetize it in a tasteful fashion. -
Senior Data EngineerIheartradio May 2013 - Jun 2017New York, UsDeveloped major SQL and ETL components for iHeart's Data Warehouse as well as ingestion and summarization of big data components. Also spent a meaningful amount of time in R with our Data Scientist apprenticing with advanced data analysis, building data models and displaying them in "shiny" dashboards. On the SQL end of things I: - Revamped and streamlined our royalty reporting process.- Built out significant data server automation including a pluggable "system health check" component that alerts on data quality issues.- Focused on rewriting/optimizing many core processes to function properly under extreme resource constraints.- Migrated data servers twice (interesting story) and proposed/implemented a major SAN upgrade. With Big Data I:- Created Python scripts based upon the luigi framework that do things like reach out to FTP locations, stream multiple files into one and store the resulting file on HDFS.- Setup file structures and Hive table definitions to leverage partitioning. Some of this involved using Serdes.- Used both Sqoop 1 and Sqoop 2 to materalize and transfer datasets between Hive and our Data Warehouse. On the ETL side I spent most of my time in Python although I did some C# and SSIS work where necessary (SSIS bores me to tears). Most of the Python work was around pulling down API data from services like Akamai, Google DFP, AppAnnie among other more common tasks like taking data warehouse data and throwing it on FTP servers in CSV format.Beyond development I spent time guiding our junior team member along with teaching many data warehouse users how to write more efficient queries. -
Avp - Data EngineerBarclays Corporate & Investment Bank Nov 2009 - May 2013New York, Ny, UsDeveloped for and maintained the backend of Barclay's Capacity and Enterprise management infrastructure. We deployed a variety of agents to every machine in the firm which reported back a wide range of information from detailed hardware inventory data to security log events to performance metrics data. The sheer quantity of data submitted multiple times daily from the nearly 300k machines in the firm created lots of stress on our backend infrastructure which I continuously optimized (in-between development efforts). Our data server handled 3x more transactions per second then the next most-active SQL Server in the firm. Some highlights from my time on the team:- Effectively tripled the capacity of our server SQL Server backend in three months though rearchitecting the configuration of our data servers, migrating to new hardware and doing extensive code rewrites on many backend components to make them more performant.- Served as the team's "cheerleader" giving multiple presentations on behalf of the team to upper management pitching new ideas and conveying existing functionality.- Successfully recruited 3 extremely bright graduate students to the team over "sexy" front office teams which were also vying for their attention. I managed their workload, wrote their reviews and provided guidance. -
