As a Filipino, my path towards a career in medicine was heavily influenced by my family, particularly my mother. Like many Asian households, familial expectations often shape our academic and professional trajectories. Initially set on becoming the first doctor in the family, I began my academic journey with a pre-medicine course in nursing at Silliman University. Yet, amidst the pressures and expectations, I found myself contemplating a different path that diverged from the traditional trajectory laid out for me. Despite my mother’s unawareness of my inclination, I considered a shift towards Business Administration at the University of the Philippines in Diliman when I passed the screening. After four years, I completed my nursing degree and obtained licensure in the Philippines and later in Illinois; however, I never practiced my profession. Instead, my aspirations veered toward the dynamic world of sales and marketing, and I did not pursue medicine. Venturing into the realm of publication with Author Solutions under Penguin Random House, I discovered an innate talent that led to numerous accolades: • Consistent Rainmaker Awardee • Consistent Millionaires Club Member • Highest Net Revenue Record Holder (still reigning in 2024) • Consistent Top Senior Sales Consultant • Consistent Top Sales SupervisorRelocating to Chicago in 2016, I transitioned into the role of neurology practice manager for Dr. David Calimag. It was here that I encountered the struggles faced by international medical graduates (IMGs) in securing residency matches and the lack of support available—a challenge that ignited a passion within me to facilitate their success. In 2021, I founded USCE MATCH, driven by the desire to create a platform for IMGs and dedicated to my late mother, who bravely fought COVID-19 in 2020. My goal was twofold: to extend support to aspiring IMGs and to collaborate with like-minded U.S. preceptors to broaden our reach and impact. Despite this endeavor's uncertainties, the remarkable matching success rates—80% in 2022, 2023, and 2024—validated our mission. While I may not have realized my late mother’s dream of becoming a doctor myself, I find profound fulfillment in championing the aspirations of every applicant through USCE MATCH. Each success story brings me closer to realizing the American dream—not just for myself but as a beacon of hope for all IMGs who continue to aspire.
