An IT PhilosophyI have spent 20 years in the IT industry working in management, consulting, support, development & project roles. With numerous trips to Europe, China, Israel and all over Australasia one thing keeps being reinforced: "IT does not market itself because we do not understand what it is we actually do." Don't worry about doing something in the best technical way – if we do not understand the customer’s needs, what they are attempting to do and how they do their business, and then adjust to deliver against those needs, we will forever be considered a cost.Information is valuable to the business, but only if it is available to the right people at the right time. What about providing flexibility, efficiency, integration between business units... IT is really a business enabler.Go beyond the basic provision of equipment and services. Use technology to get the right information to the right people. Integrate. Provide tools to allow others to adjust to changes in the operational landscape. This is where the value is, and it can be measured in terms of making life easier and more productive for others.We are passionate about IT. Others are not and cannot see the point. IT needs to straddle these viewpoints and have technical conversations internally and business conversations externally.
