Entrepreneur, media pioneer and veteran journalist building the future of community and audience connections. I believe we finally have the tools to fulfill the dream of a genuinely connected media: Media that listens as much as it publishes or broadcasts; media that's community-powered, audience-centered, uniquely a product of the people it serves—and financially sustainable because it's indispensable. I founded and run GroundSource, which unlocks the power of the most ubiquitous and engaging communications technology: text messaging. GroundSource enables two-way communications at scale via SMS, voice, and other channels—helping media and community-focused organizations build lasting relationships with their most valued and valuable audiences. I co-founded the Public Insight Network, a pioneering audience engagement platform used by more than 100 newsrooms to inform and shape their journalism by gathering knowledge and expertise from hundreds of thousands of community sources. I served as Midwest Correspondent for The Economist, business and economics reporter for Minnesota Public Radio, was a John S. Knight Professional Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, a Reynolds Journalism Institute Fellow, and Entrepreneur in Residence at the Center for Collaborative Journalism at Mercer University.

FounderGroundsource Jan 2013 - PresentSt. Paul, Minnesota, UsGroundSource enables community-based organizations to build authentic, two-way conversations with their stakeholders via mobile. We've eliminated many of the barriers to community engagement to power inclusive, rich conversations with even hard-to-reach communities. We work with media orgs, small and large NGO's, non-profits, and individual journalists/researchers here in the US and in Africa. We have ambitions to spread to East Africa and throughout the US (to start), focusing on organizations that need to reach out to their communities and engage them directly in ways that are hard/impossible to do via social media because (among other reasons): * their community is not digitally-switched or only have phones that support text/voice* because they don't have a pre-existing relationship and therefore engaging them on social is a non-starter * because they want to establish a direct channel and own and manage the relationship & the data that flows from it (CRM)* because messaging / texting is the most ubiquitous and natural form of digital communications known to humankind -
