I have prime responsibility for planning and executing the migrating of existing systems or developing new applications into the Cloud, primarily Amazon Web Services, for Elsevier's EMEA region. This involves architectural design for the Cloud platform of choice, including all relevant costings for development, test, integration, acceptance and production environments. Once built and deployed I have the responsibility for controlling the on-going release process into those environments, with the relevant change control and auditing procedures that the application requires.Internally I have built up and manage a dedicated AWS DevOps engineering team, and am responsible for training our more-traditional System Administrators and DBAs in Cloud systems. Automation is key - whether via CloudFormation deployments on AWS or Puppet on AWS or on-premise - as is the provisioning of the tools for our internal development environments; hence I am also responsible for the delivery, support and maintenance of tools such as source control, build automation, continuous integration, ticketing systems, system log collection/management and any other tool deemed necessary for Elsevier to build and deploy its software.Systems need to be assessed for the Cloud on an individual basis, taking accessibility, maintainability, security, scalability and cost into account. I am responsible for championing the Cloud as a concept across the business in the EMEA region, and also work closely with a teams in the USA in another part of the business. I am also part of effort to formalise Cloud Reference Architecture patterns for Elsevier's global Enterprise Architecture group, as well as to derive and validate our processes and procedures for deploying SOX-regulated applications into the Cloud.As Elsevier Science is a global company this role requires me to work closely with project teams in other countries around the world, as well as work with offshore vendor partners.

Reporting direct to the CTO, and sitting on the Senior Management Team alongside the CEO and CFO, I was responsible for all things technical within the company in terms of Product Development, Customer Support and IT Infrastructure, as well as all policies and processes that go alongside this. Our market is primarily Home Office Police Forces and other supra-national law-enforcement agencies, generally in the areas of Police Protective Services such as Firearms and Armoury Management, and SC clearance is required at all times for this work.The Product Development aspect of the role involves line management of the software architects, developers and testers, as well as project planning, resourcing and management of all product-related projects, sign-off of all estimates and development budgets and approval of all customer requirements and technical specifications. This also includes managing the Software Development Process within the team.The Customer Service aspect includes customer liaison responsibility with respect to new product requirements, management of all Support/Helpdesk issues and the devising, tracking and resourcing of software and hardware implementation plans at customer sites.IT Infrastructure is the management of everything to do with the office networks and infrastructure - mail servers, backup systems, intranet portal, AV management, internal applications (Oracle, CRM tools, etc.), remote VPN access, staff computer equipment and phone systems, and all of the security policies that go with them.

Managed the Payments Development team, responsible for the design, development and delivery of all electronic payment products to handle Bacstel-IP, ETS, Faster Payments and SWIFT. As well as line-managing the developers directly I also project managed the work within the Development department, being responsible for accepting specifications from Product Management, providing estimates, planning, tracking and reporting. Any work required from the Test Team (who had their own dedicated Test Manager) had to effectively be matrix-managed, as did any work performed by an Offshore facility in India.

Went from Senior Software Engineer in Java to Development Team Leader, via a stint in Product Management, working on the CODA Financials suite of software. I was primarily responsible for the first release of the CODA Workflow application, but also spent time on requirements analysis, training and on-site support for the Consultancy team

Developed software in C/C++ and parallel DSP assembly languages for a mixture of civil and military projects, including military training systems, chemical sensors and digital CCTV systems. Technical lead for all DSP-related areas of company product, including technology choices and systems design.
