I served for four years as the National Chair of the Board of Directors for The DREAM Program, a youth-serving social justice organization with which I have been involved for a number of years. When I came on as Chair, DREAM was a small local mentoring program with a $500k budget and just a small handful of staff. We are now proud to be a major regional social justice organization with a strong presence in three northeastern metro areas, a budget quickly approaching $2m, scores of incredible staff and Americorps members, and a vision for closing the opportunity gap for children in low-income housing. We now provide a wide suite of programming for our kids - both broader and deeper than ever - though still focused on our Village Mentoring model and the unique mentor-mentee relationships that are at our core.In my time as Chair I focused on a few key initiatives: the organization's evolution into an increasingly equity-oriented, antiracist and holistic social justice organization (including founding and chairing our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee); developing a robust strategic plan (and particularly cultivating the Board's ability to contribute strategic guidance to the organization); and building our ability to collect, analyze, and use information systems for participants, program evaluation and surveys, donor data, and accreditation of our regions. I also led, in 2018, the process for hiring and transitioning to a new CEO. My approach throughout was inspired by the pathos of the organization itself: compassionate, relationship-centric leadership, engaging constantly with individual Board members and stakeholders to find ways they can make strategic, meaningful impact.
