I am a Conservation Accredited Engineer and co-leader of Arup’s specialist existing buildings team in London. I am also Arup’s Global timber specialist, Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor in Timber Engineering at Cambridge University and a Trustee of the Arup UK Pension Scheme.I began my career as a structural engineer in 1993, working on a variety of building and civil engineering projects, before specialising in both timber and existing buildings in 2002. I have undertaken structural safety assessments of a wide range of existing structures across the world in a variety of construction materials, including several large building portfolios and several legal expert commissions. I am also working with research bodies across Europe to help enable the new larger breed of timber structures, through my role on various BSI and Eurocode committees. I believe that structural engineers have a duty to our clients and to society to improve the sustainability of construction. This means not only finding safe and innovative ways to reuse more of our existing building stock, but also building new structures with more emphasis on adaptability and durability to help maximise their life. I am committed to improving structural safety across the industry through my role on the HSE Building Advisory Committee, through my lecturing role at Cambridge and my active membership of code committees for both timber and existing buildings.
