As a clinical assistant, I worked with physiatrists daily, assisting in procedures, taking histories, and practicing patient assessment. As part of the program I was required to give weekly presentations on anatomy and various disease conditions. This has honed both my research and presentation skills in a setting specific to my interests. I have also organized a journal club of medical students, medical residents, and physicians. Overall this externship gave me practical skills and training within my field of choice, training that will help me as a medical student and physician.

Working at the Seattle Sperm Bank requires a multitude of skills. As a Biological Analyst I am responsible for sample analysis and purification. This position has developed good lab practice and an interesting insight into the world of reproductive medicine. I am now a Washington State Certified Phlebotomist.

Guyana

During my time with the Peace Corps I worked as a Community Health Promoter in a rural health hut located in the jungles of Guyana. I worked with the local Community Health Workers in order to conduct health talks and carry out the daily activities of the health hut.I was exposed first hand to the issues of Global Health. I spent time learning an understanding the complex Malaria prevention and treatment program that exists within Guyana. I also had the opportunity to understand the malaria parasite and am able to identify both the vivax and falciparum parasite under the microscope. I collaborated with my counterpart on a project to draw a 9 foot skeleton on the wall that would be used for patient education. I was elected by my fellow peers to a position on the Volunteer Advisory Council to represent my cohort to the Peace Corps Staff. While on the council I worked to raise the volunteer stipend, facilitate better training, and address other issues that volunteers were facing. It was a great opportunity to practice leadership, work collaboratively, and ultimately bring results that brought a better experience for staff and volunteers.

I interned with the University of Washington Athletic Trainers. The internship was focused on exposing the interns to the world of rehabilitation medicine and sports medicine. I received training in various modalities, rehabilitation techniques, and developed my own abilities to work with patients. I gained exposure to a variety of sports, injuries, and other issues and was taught how to develop a detailed and specific rehabilitation plan for each unique athlete.
