Acting as a member of the Patient Access Services team with St. Luke’s Health System I was bound by similar legal regulations as my time with Portneuf Medical Center, nonetheless I quickly moved myself up the ranks through hard work and professional interactions. The job requires that I interact with many different groups of people from many different places in life and treat them all equally and respectfully. Through these interactions I was responsible for verifying the confidential electronic health record and insurance information. After only two years with St. Luke’s, I requested that I be placed into a higher level position and take on the responsibility of training newly hired employees, a position only held by one other employee at the time. To achieve and maintain the trainer position it required that I have an in-depth knowledge of many policies and procedures, additionally, I had to be adamant to keep up to date as there were occasional changes.

Being a Patient Access Specialist at Portneuf Medical Center requires that I work with a team to verify and update patient demographic information. Patient access in the emergency room requires that I accurately check in patients by receiving consent signatures and advance directive information. In addition, I am responsible for verifying patient insurance information and processing cash, check, and credit/debit transactions for any applicable patient copays and liabilities. This position requires that I be trained in and abide by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) and Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.At Portneuf Medical Center I was also trained to work in the main admissions office where I would often work with and collect payment for large dollar accounts. In addition I worked in several outpatient locations such as the outpatient laboratory, same day surgery, and sleep lab. I often take it upon myself to reorder and replenish supplies when time allows.

I was responsible for working with a diverse team in professionally assisting customers with questions regarding stock, policy, and product specifics. I was also expected to maintain the visual appearance of the store by straightening products on the shelves and replacing any product that had been moved to the incorrect location. Shopko also required that I assist with unloading freight trucks when necessary. This included lifting large, heavy and unusual shaped boxes. When working on the freight crew I was also responsible for checking in and verifying a quantity of high priced items such as electronics and large furniture sets.
