I created a curriculum and taught classes in basic computer skills to adults from diverse backgrounds through the Adult Literacy department at the Nashville Public Library. The adult learners included parents of elementary school children with limited English skills, those trying to start a new life after incarceration, and those who call the streets of Nashville home that are trying to rebuild their lives.

After my sophomore year in college I started working for LifeView and Electric Picture Company. Both companies were very small and shared common ownership. LifeView specializes in healthcare video production and primarily makes informational/promotional videos for surgical device manufacturers to help physicians and patients learn about new surgical products and procedures. While in college I spent many hours digitizing footage from Betacam and Digital Betacam sources on the late shift so they could be ready for editing the next day. I also learned to use Photoshop (version 3 with only one undo) to create graphics. After working full-time in the summers and part-time during the school year I joined LifeView full time after graduation. Over the years my skill set grew to include editing, shooting, interviewing, producing, directing, writing, 2D and 3D motion graphics, product and portrait photography with photo strobes, client communication and management, website design and creation, e-commerce web store design and creation and management, marketing email design and creation, print design and supervision, and various odds and ends that just needed to be done such as network troubleshooting and forklift operating.

I began working with TapeOnline when it was called Electric Picture Company and was mainly a professional video equipment rental company. Over the years I did many things including: design postcards and other advertising materials and supervise their printing at a local print shop, helping swap out 16mm film in timelapse cameras documenting the construction of Nashville's football stadium as well as helping design and maintain an electronic timelapse system for documenting the construction of the Nashville Public Library, helping with server maintenance, working a booth at film festivals, customer service, or anything else that needed doing. The company expanded into local pro videotape sales and eventually the idea of selling videotape using the internet became an opportunity they wanted to explore. While the majority of the coding was provided by an external company, it ended up being one of the owners and I who polished up the look of the website and saw it through to launch. I also helped design and distribute marketing emails along with various promotional materials like mousepads and t-shirts.

While working part-time as a computer lab assistant on campus I tutored inexperienced students and teachers in applications like Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Internet Explorer. I also helped them learn the basics of HTML as well as basic UNIX for accessing the campus email system. I also gained experience installing and maintaining computer hardware and software for Macs and PCs including network installation and troubleshooting.

The summer following the Oklahoma City bombing I worked with junior high and high school students in the area. I ran sound and lights for youth group meetings in addition to teaching classes and spending time with students away from the church.

During my senior year of high school I spent the second half of the day at the local cable access channel as a co-op student. One of my duties was replaying high school football games on Saturday mornings, including on-the-fly instant replays during the broadcast.

I began volunteering as a camera operator at age 11 in the video ministry of the church I grew up in. I worked my way through different positions including creating lower third graphics, learning how to setup and paint the cameras, technical directing, and directing. There were three cameras in our multi-cam setup so it was a lot of fun as a kid to learn what everyone did, how everything worked, and how everybody communicated with each other to put together a weekly live broadcast for local TV, as well as an edited broadcast for satellite distribution. During my high school years I also worked with the youth ministry of the church running live sound and lights for Wednesday night services as well as annual choir tours. As the youth group grew in size I learned tape-to-tape linear editing for creative videos that would be shown on Wednesday nights as well as for a cable access TV show.
