I teach an online course and data journalism & visualization, running students from the basic spreadsheets and Datawrapper all the way to SQLite databases and Tableau. Along the way, we file FOIA requests for the Death Star’s crew roster.

I ran POLITICO’s Interactive News team, which reports + builds beautiful stories, develops prototypes for new products, and runs the publication’s best-in-class election rig.

As a senior product manager, I worked with the newsroom and our engineering division to make cool stuff happen.My biggest project was relaunching The Atlantic's iOS app, building out a new reading experience that ultimately won a Shorty Award for news app innovation.Along the way, I prototyped a voice assistant game for kids, built a bot to track our homepage, and came up with my perfect capsule wardrobe.

Wrote dozens of data-driven stories about politics in America on the eve on Donald Trump's election. When I wasn't doing that, I was busy making dodge-the-campaign-ad computer games, voice-activated desk lamps, and a button that ordered Sweetgreen automatically.

Led a crafty team of two designers in building out digital graphics for our politics-focused audience. We broke ground in building web apps, culminating in a 2016 candidate "travel tracker" that was cited by many other news sources.

- Worked to build the Post-Gazette's computer-assisted reporting efforts. Wrote data-driven stories, including a project on the mass surveillance of Pittsburgh drivers by the city's parking authority. Promoted data literacy on staff, leading both newsroom-wide and beat-specific training on computer-assisted techniques.- Designed online interactives and web apps, including a web scraper tracking the movements of Pittsburgh's mayor.- Wrote, built interactives and implemented a redesign for Pipeline, the Post-Gazette's award-winning speciality site covering natural gas development in Pennsylvania and beyond.- Covered Allegheny County government, examining a controversial plan to drill for natural gas in county parks and highlighting abuse at a juvenile detention facility

- Reported spot news, covered a slate of local communities and schools, and pitched project stories early and often.- Covered the Jerry Sandusky child abuse scandal at Penn State, writing stories that were published across the Tribune Company network. - Developed web applications for The Morning Call, including a tool helping readers estimate their tax bill amid a property reassessment, an election night results tracker, and an interactive map charting memories of Sept. 11.

Managed a staff of more than 100. Edited daily news copy. Supervised and implemented design decisions.
