  • Opentable
    Head Of International Engineering
    Opentable Oct 2014 - Jan 2015
    San Francisco, California, Us
    * Following the acquisition of OpenTable by Priceline Group in June 2014 the main initiative was international expansion. This expansion and the engineering effort to support it was to be located in the London office, lead by myself to drive the move into many new markets globally. * I became the lead engineer of the group in London totalling 30 heads. This involved representation of all UK web engineering and managing a transition from the former head of engineering in the UK to a new structure.* I was responsible for a recruitment drive to increase the UK group by 15 including all levels of engineers, a delivery manager and also accommodating new product management roles into the combined group in the London office. Creating an effective employee brand around the company and particularly the engineering team was a key component of the recruitment, using the tech blog (tech.opentable.co.uk), carefully selected recruiters and being able to appreciate any team needs to sell itself as much as any candidate.
  • Opentable
    Head Of Search Engineering
    Opentable Sep 2013 - Oct 2014
    San Francisco, California, Us
    * I ran the search engineering team as we replatformed search traffic for all of the OpenTable consumer website, mobile traffic to new automated infrastructure and fully tested code whilst adding various new features such as travel time search and new sorting algorithms. This included the front end of the search experience on the desktop website and the API behind all mobile experiences. * Most recently all pages for opentable.[com/co.uk/de/jp/com.mx] have been completely rethought and redesigned to a much more modern experience. We also had to think carefully about all factors affected SEO during this.* The Search API was behind the featured OpenTable app at the iOS 7 launch, during WWDC by Apple. * An average month saw more than 150 million requests through search systems.* Technologies and tools used included .Net, Elastic Search, Backbone, Node, TeamCity, PowerShell, Puppet, Specflow, NUnit, LogStash, Kibana, Grafana, AppDynamics, Nagios, PagerDuty.* My team followed various principles and techniques including BDD, TDD, Continuous Deployment, Continuous Integration, 20% time. We took a largely lean approach to process and delivering stories with a methodology including retrospectives, stand ups and frequent planning as necessary. All team members got a say and all views were respected, trust was the key part of the team dynamic.* I also fulfilled the role of deputy to the head of the engineering with responsibilities to represent all UK teams and company wide projects accordingly.* We were passionate fans of Continuous Deployment with only one button needed from pull request merge to production deployment.* Official job title - Senior Engineering Manager
  • Opentable
Various Management And Contract Engineer Roles
    Opentable Oct 2008 - Sep 2012
    San Francisco, California, Us
    • I was asked to demonstrate to the wider engineering group the benefits of moving to a rethought, nimble architecture. A project was trialled on a partner integration for lastminute.com by creating a crude SOA structure that could be subsequently improved and honed towards Continuous Delivery. • Migration of the full toptable stack onto OpenTable systems. Involved multiple teams either side of the Atlantic. My team was responsible for migrating our partners to the new stack seamlessly. We built a bridge from the existing toptable API over to the OpenTable API. I also coordinated much of the engineering effort across all related efforts managed from the UK office towards this migration. We had to use a range of legacy and newer systems. Newer systems included TDD through NUnit on WCF.• Managed a team integrating the OpenTable reservation and table availability systems into corresponding toptable systems when the consumer experiences were still separate. This was built on our .NET stack of services using WCF, OpenRasta along side testing frameworks of MSpec, NUnit and RSpec as required.• Creation of a web based restaurant table availability app for restaurants to manage table availability. This was a largely JavaScript application using JQuery and JSON data sources served through ASP.NET MVC. • Creation of a Service Oriented Architecture out of the .NET toptable website to enable faster iteration of the code base and more flexible testing and rollouts. This effort centred on using TDD to wrap legacy code and then refactor. • My first role was to help “get toptable.com over the line”. It was supposed to be a 3-month contract that became 6 years and a permanent position. Toptable.com represented the push into international markets and a rethink of toptable.co.uk, previously a UK only site.
  • Couraud
    It Manager
    Couraud Sep 2006 - Jun 2008
Couraud was a boutique people management start-up serving Government departments and largely blue chip clients such as HSBC and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Starting as a contractor I was asked to join the organisation as IT Manager reporting to the founders. Responsibilities included Product Development (.NET using SQL Server), Office Infrastructure, Outsourcing (Staff and Hardware) and IT Training.
  • Artificial Gold
    Owner / Contractor
    Artificial Gold Mar 2005 - Sep 2006
Artificial Gold has been my limited company for 10 years and I originally went full time with self-employment in March 2005. From this base I developed a range of web based start-up ideas, mostly unsuccessful, ran a small agency and much more successfully partnered with more established startups often as a contract development resource and advisor, one of which was www.lodging-world.com which I was involved with from a very early stage.
  • Ceridian
    Sales It Consultant
    Ceridian Aug 2002 - Mar 2005
    Minneapolis, Mn, Us
My major role was Sales IT Consultant. My largest project was to develop the internal CRM system using .NET Windows Forms and Sql Server. 100 users were using the system when I left the organisation. I started on the Graduate Sales Programme where I gained excellent sales training, including negotiation.
