● High Performance Computing: Running Monte Carlo simulations using EGSnrc on a computing cluster (CentOS, 66 total processors). Was involved in fixing and maintaining the cluster.● Full-stack web-development: Furthering development of a web-based system "Corona" of radiology tools (and preparing the system to be used clinically at GRRCC) by the Medical Physics department of the Cancer Centre. We are working to improve the quality assurance of radiation treatments done in the Cancer Centre, as well as improving the Centre's ability to carry out research with this system. Coding involves: Python/Django, as well as web design using HTML 5.0, CSS, and Javascript. Academic publication on this system is in late stages of preparation.● Extracting and/or cleaning data for various radiation treatment studies being done at the hospital.● Modifying (or adding to) scripts and software tools used for medical physics research.● Debugging/fixing issues with software used by the medical physicists at GRRCC.Note: From late May - August, I was funded by the Harold E. Jones research scholarship.

Hydrological modelling and programming. (Fortran, excel, some python, and some C#)● Worked full-time on a new version of the company's main hydrology modeling software product, Visual Otthymo. Implemented algorithms to enable long-term continuous simulations to be run using a modified version of the classic Otthymo engine. The new program was tested against various hydrological models.● Took part in development meetings and produced documentation.● Assisted with mathematical techniques for quality assurance of flow data.

Assisted with research using the Physics Department's femtosecond laser lab, with duties including: ● Designing and building devices to be used in future experiments.● Helping test vacuum pumps.● Ordering lab supplies.● Learning about how to use and maintain the femtosecond laser.● Assisting, when available, in day-to-day running of the lab.I also had the opportunity to be independent and creative with designing and building a millisecond shutter and starting work on a computer-controlled motorized platform.● The millisecond shutter was built from the rotary voice-coil actuator of a hard drive and was based on a design from the University of Melbourne. We hope to use it to allow the laser to send a single 50 to 100 femtosecond (10^-15 s) pulse through at a time (the laser produces 1000 ~femtosecond pulses every second).● The computer-controlled motorized platform uses a LabVIEW-based interface and will hopefully be useful in careful positioning of samples for radiation experiments, laser-welding, and/or potential micro-machining experiments of some kind.
