We validated internet research by interviewing industry thought leaders, leading to the identification of target sectors and forecasting P&L and ROI. We identified funding sources through private equity, commercial investors, grants and self funding.We reviewed patent portfolios, exploit the good ones and recommend dropping the bad ones. Typically this recovers £40k per patent family.

Contracted by the University of Bath in 2008 to manage the strategic development of this start-up, commercialising their laser technology IP. Developed business model and routes to market strategy, presenting a bid to an investors group for Innovation funding, winning primary position.Rejoined the company, now based in Limoges, initially as Business Development Director in 2011 then took over as Président / CEO in 2012. Full executive responsibility for the business including all aspects of governance.Led Operations and Research teams in developing a simplified commercial product to meet market requirements. Identified and met potential customers in international markets including Germany, Switzerland, Scandinavia and the USA.Promoted the new product concept and won the first prototype orders totalling €30k. Customers included Raydiance, Menlo, Light Age and the US National Institutes of Health. This proved market potential and company value to prospective investors. Drove board negotiations to resolve a difficult internal company direction conflict. Appointed as interim Président as part of the agreed resolution to secure the future of the business. Persuaded shareholders to invest in the business personally and led them in identifying and appointing a new permanent Président, enabling the business to progress.

Tasked with the commercialisation of the ground breaking forensic technology, which analyses DNA within 2 hours whilst a suspect is in custody, aiding crime prevention and saving UK Police a projected £58m annually. Interacted with senior police and potential users to understand client’s operational environment and identify their needs.Wrote and executed the Go to Market plan for Rapid DNA, accepted by the Board, with comprehensive financial forecasting and global market identification. Negotiated manufacturing partnerships with Microfluidic ChipShop GmbH and LRE Medical GmbH and established the supply chain to manufacture and sell robust product. Resolved an inherited dispute with a licensee over loss-making forensic software. Met with the US distributor negotiating the transfer of the FSS technology, gaining agreement from both Boards and working with the legal team to execute the agreement. Avoided litigation, reduced risk and secured royalties of c.$200k for FSS.

Won a £6m contract with UK government research council EPSRC to commercialise the advanced semiconductor and sensor prototyping facility at Southampton University. Appointed as CEO and set up the company, building it into a £2m p.a. business. Saved the business following a major fire at the facility in 2005. Met contractual obligation to resume shipping within 30 days or lose the contract. Successfully managed the relocation logistics of 9 Operations staff and complex manufacturing processes to a new facility in Eindhoven, resuming function in just 21 days and securing the EPSRC contract.Secured the long-term future of the company, negotiating c.£1m of Business Interruption Funding to support recovery and enable the business to operate in the wake of the disaster. Identified a new manufacturing site in Southampton, overseeing its construction through the development and delivery of a strategic funding plan. These actions enabled the negotiation of a c.£10m component supply contract with Philips spin-out, Polymervision Ltd, solidifying their status as a rapidly growing business.
