About Andy Nolan

As the Director of Emerging Technologies at Thoughtworks, I lead a team of talented and passionate engineers who apply the latest advances in AI and computer vision to solve complex and meaningful problems in healthcare, food production, and climate change. I have over 20 years of experience in developing and deploying novel technologies into challenging and regulated environments, such as underwater, drones, and livestock.My journey in emerging technologies began when I founded Digital Falcon, a startup that improved agricultural efficiency and environmental management using remote sensing, robotics, and AI. After successfully growing the business and acquiring multiple noteworthy clients, we merged with Coles Group in 2017, where I became the Principal Engineer of the new disruptive technology division, LAB288. There, I led a cross-functional team of software, electronic, and mechatronic engineers to deliver innovative solutions in AI, computer vision, robotics, IoT, data streaming, and distributed systems. I also published several academic papers and presented at conferences on the applications of AI and computer vision in vineyard mapping and management.I am driven by the vision of creating positive social and environmental impact with emerging technologies, and I am always eager to learn new skills and explore new domains. I hold a Master of Philosophy in Environmental Engineering from the University of Melbourne, a Master in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and a Bachelor in Computing from Monash University. I also have multiple certifications in geospatial analysis, deep learning, and drone piloting. I am looking forward to collaborating with likeminded professionals and organisations who share my passion and values.
