I'm a European and UK patent attorney, working as a partner in the Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals team at J A Kemp, one of Europe's leading patents and trademarks firms.My academic background is in chemistry. Some of my work lies squarely in that field, including in the pharmaceutical area, where my clients span the gamut from universities and start-ups to major multinational corporations. I have also worked particularly extensively on patents in polymer science, industrial chemistry and biomass processing, to name a few, as well as in areas that combine chemistry with biotechnology such as in microbial production of industrial chemicals, in vitro diagnostics, and chemical modification of antibodies.I lead our Chemistry and Pharmaceuticals team’s business efforts in the US and in Japan, and (at least until COVID times) have been a regular and enthusiastic visitor to both countries. I provide European patent counsel and handle the prosecution of European and UK patent applications for a large number of US and Japanese companies, in many cases directly on instruction from in-house IP specialists, but also via a wide range of local law firms. In addition, I have prosecuted patent applications on behalf on many of the most prestigious and innovative universities in both countries.Domestically, much of my current drafting, prosecution, and wider strategic counsel is provided to UK universities, associated spin-outs and other SMEs. Having worked closely with technology transfer clients throughout my career, I am well-versed in the range of unique challenges faced by academics and business managers alike in this sector.Within J A Kemp, I have led our patent attorney training provision for many years, and am also an active member of the firm’s D&I group. Outside of work, I am a long-standing (and long-suffering) supporter of the perhaps misnamed Charlton Athletic FC, as well as being a keen long distance runner.
