I joined Nivio to take over the management of a team of 100+ engineers around the globe. I opened a new engineering office in Palo Alto, California recruiting in Ph.D. and Master’s degree software engineers. I replaced five disparate global data centers with a single platform and hosting provider, cutting operational costs in half. I directed the re-architecture of many components in the system, removing performance barriers, scaling bottlenecks and single points of failure throughout the infrastructure.Nivio provided hosted Windows desktops, mobile access, user management, networked storage, file sharing and pay-as-you-go apps. At Locationary I lead the effort to refactor the system infrastructure for large-scale, cost efficiency and performance. After hiring in some new engineers, I replaced the monolith datastore with a scalable, sharded design. I designed a new data extraction system that delivered results in 1/100th of the time. I authored data processing algorithms to find faulty data in the system and used statistical techniques to tune the efficiency of the mechanical Turk capabilities of the system. I also updated and replaced the system operations environment to run at half the cost with 10x the performance. I was fully engaged with customers and partners, working onsite at Neustar in support of the partnership with Localeze.Locationary solves the massive local business/places data fragmentation, accuracy and universal broadcast update challenges. With its patent-pending crowd-sourcing system, Locationary enables local residents, visitors and business owners to update/correct local business information in their community everyday... and keep them motivated to do so using engaging game mechanics. In calendar year 2010 the services I managed delivered to over 38 million unique revenue generating consumers. My responsibilities included all aspects of production and operations including software development, quality assurance and service operations. My teams produced a wide variety of technology in support of the product suite including ad network services, ad insertion technologies, game packaging tools, game installers, back-end game engine services and content delivery services. My team delivered ad enabled games and services for companies such as Yahoo, Microsoft, NBC Universal, IAC and Lycos. At Kinitos (aka NeoEdge) I managed all aspects of customer support, training, sales engineering and technical evangelism for the Kinitos Smart Client Management Solution. I served as the primary technical contact for a variety of financial services accounts including Harland Financial, Bloomberg and SunGard. As part of my job I led a team of customer support, sales engineering and professional services engineers. Kinitos technology was repurposed and launched as NeoEdge Networks in 2006.

At AOL I was responsible for delivery of speech recognition, audio prompting and content processing tools for AOL-by-Phone. I also delivered numerous promotional robots for AOL instant messenger, including one to promote the first Harry Potter movie. In my later years at AOL, I managed AOL’s online polling infrastructure, used in promotions for American Idol, the NFL Super Bowl and numerous political elections. I was also responsible for the technical team behind groups.aol.com and managed AOL’s embedded chat product, part of AOL’s AIM infrastructure. My projects were recognized by the CEO on multiple occasions in his AOL weekly wins newsletter.

At Nortel I wrote software for large-scale fax processing in C and C++ on pSOS and UNIX. I also wrote a protocol library for telephony switch communication (OAS) in C++. Later, I modeled large scale telephony systems with a proprietary state machine modeling technique of my own design. I used the model to create an automated test system that increased testing efficiency 1000 fold. After that I wrote control logic for a subscriber based billing system used by numerous telcos. Toward the end of my time with Nortel I served as technical liaison between AOL and Nortel during one year partnership between the companies. I was recognized with a company wide innovation award and selected to serve on the engineering and process council chaired by a Nortel VP.
