BC Ferries is the largest passenger ferry line in North America and the second largest in the world, operating a fleet of 36 vessels with a total passenger and crew capacity of over 27,000, serving 47 locations on the B.C. coast.Working in the rank of 3rd Engineering Officer and Officer In Charge of the Engineering Watch, my responsibilities included maintaining various systems on board, such as: main engines, high-voltage electrical power generation, pumps and fuel transfer, hydraulic, cooling, and pneumatic systems. This entailed both the monitoring of these systems for their safe and efficient operations, their repair and training of both engineering and general ship’s crew in their use. Using the latest automation and control technologies my duties were to ensure problems were quickly diagnosed and the necessary repairs executed. When in charge of the watch, I was responsible for the initial engineering response to abnormal and emergency conditions related to machinery. My role also required acting as an interdepartmental hub and go to source of vessel technical and safety information, including making the crew aware of this information by leading discussions and emergency response drills.

As an Engineer’s Assistant I participated in the maintenance of the mechanical, electrical, and propulsion systems of vessels. I monitored and maintained machinery, and provided watch relief, including diligently conducting rounds while performing general housekeeping duties. In addition, I performed safety checks by ensuring emergency systems are in order and participated in emergency safety drills and represented the engineering department in ship wide safety meetings.
