I like fixing things and fighting against the natural decay due to systemantics.Usually, this comes down to tool building, and often on a shoestring budget. Ideally, more budget is better, but solving a problem with Legos and a roll of Kapton is fun (and surprisingly effective). Other times it means perpetrating acts of technical shenanigans with self-coding Excel, bootstrapping web servers without escalation, or putting pen-cams in the (simulated) final frontier. Note that I document and justify my work/hacks and I am careful to prepare for unexpected or undesired side effects. (With the one unregrettable exception that one time I DDOS'd a co-op using Lync, which I still contend was an accident, no matter how hilarious it was.)Despite initial impressions, I am strongly pragmatic. Things break, wrong things are set up for good reasons, and often machines operate perpetually in failure modes. My specialty is finding out why something went wrong, why it may not *actually* went wrong, and what to do (or not do) about it. I'll usually call this 'Troubleshooting', but it's more strongly akin to simple empathy for the machine and operators. I've seen some astonishing failures, but almost always it's simply the earnest effort of well-meaning people or machines dealing with too little information and too much pressure. I like to alleviate that stress for people, if only a little.----For the sake of pigeonholing, these two popular sorters bucket me as:KTS II - INTP “Architect” - RationalStrengthsFinder 2.0 - Strategic, Learner, Ideation, Self-Assurance, Command----My long-term goals involve bolting a heuristics engine to a production line, hopefully providing an answer to the time-worn question "why didn't anybody notice [obscure PLC tag] went awry?" Modern production lines are immensely complex, and old production lines using modern equipment doubly so; I want to help those machines. And - if possible - make one.

Director Of Business IntelligenceIntellic Integration Mar 2016 - Jul 2019Dallas/Fort Worth AreaI help with getting plant data to higher level systems, usually with the Ignition SCADA platform. Often this involves data munging, service interactions, and databases of all sorts of flavors. There's a strong focus on international teams working together as well, which almost consistently is a surprising treat in new perspectives. There is a veritable alphabet soup of tech at play, too, from REST to SQL to Git to Python to SCRUM to dozens of other acronyms and odd brand names. -
SabaticalNull Directory Dec 2018 - Feb 2019Tom'S River, NjI migrated most of my personal services and hosted software into containers. The destination server ran Docker on ZFS, using Rancher v2 for orchestration. For the most part it was a joy, though getting a Kubernetes storage class that would automatically provision on bare metal was hard (ZFS does not yet support extents, which subtly breaks just about everything from Ceph to Longhorn). I also spent some time researching getting a physical compute modeling pipeline set up using OpenFOAM and Code_ASTER (to take advantage of the server's resources while designing locally). This also included escapades in X11, Bash on Windows, redirecting Minecraft / Factorio / Farming Simulator, and other minutae and shenanigans. At least /dev/null/ is back up.

Systems EngineerTrimax Systems Corp. Feb 2015 - Feb 2016Richardson, TxIntegration work specializing as a generalist, with a strong tendency to software work. Generally the work revolves around Inductive Automation's Ignition SCADA, which is a web based Java application that is scripted in Python and connects the lowest level machines to the highest level services. (For example, gather data off a PLC on the shop floor, upload to a database, react to value changes, and email a PDF report when out of spec.)I also maintain a Phabricator instance for our customer's feature and bug tracking details. It is extremely pretty good.

Process EngineerGaf Nov 2012 - Jan 2015Dallas/Fort Worth AreaThere are half a dozen data systems that need interacting, so I built a pure TSQL abstraction layer connecting and simplifying each system, complete with a full API reference manual (~180 pgs). I also used this data to inform the annual Bill of Materials (BoM) for the two lines, with the goal of having both an attainable and profitable target. In the hopes of easing operator feedback/data collection, my team built a full-stack web app for interacting with SharePoint/WinSPC (Python Tornado, PostgreSQL, Framework7). Another project attempted to replace all paperwork using Excel automation, which greatly increased data collection, but was thwarted by what I've come to call The Clipboard Problem. I also made some pretty neat charts. In the experimental stages, I worked on some automation for QA using an off-the-shelf Canon PowerShot, the CHDK (Lua), and OpenCV (Python). The results were promising, but required more computing power than was available for constant, on-line use (some metal was eventually provisionally obtained, but the project had already been mothballed). My position ends at the end of the year (Dec 2014). -
Process EngineerGuardian Industries Corp. Nov 2008 - Jul 2012Corsicana, TxWide area thin film sputter deposition on a football field long coater. I worked to improve the process, which varies from modeling/analyzing coating structure, system tuning, quality control and statistics, and - more often than I care to admit - breaking glass. Highlights include:* a high resolution magnet scanner with Legos, some SparkFun parts, and LabView* embarassing amounts of Excel automation and processing* iFix SCADA automation, both for design and machine operation* finding a piece of cleanroom bootie thread that caused $LARGE in lost product with a $20 pen cam* re-used same pen cam to save troubleshooting hours for scratches chamber* unlaminating a hundred square feet of glass from a roll* every time I found a new feature documented in a language other than English
