I deliver keynote speeches on topics including personal productivity, deadlines, procrastination at work and school, and office culture. I have spoken at colleges and universities, including Northwestern and Kenyon, as well as at cultural venues such as New York City's 92Y and NeueHouse.

I have worked with universities including the University of Notre Dame, the University of Cincinnati, Arizona State University, Elmhurst University and Dominican University, to conceive and execute admissions marketing viewbooks, development campaign statement books, alumni magazines and websites, and print advertising campaigns. I have also written speeches, articles and op-eds for university presidents, some of which have been published in the New York Times and the Chronicle of Higher Education.

My nonfiction book "Soon" was published by Dey St./HarperCollins in 2018 and received rave reviews in the Wall Street Journal, Bookforum, and other publications. My essays have been honored by the editors of the Best American Essays series and by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education. My work has appeared in the New York Times, Slate, GQ, the Atlantic, Commonweal, Chicago magazine, Notre Dame magazine, and many other publications. My piece on the science of happiness was named one of the year's notable essays by the editors of the Best American Essays series. My story "No Time For You," about careerism and marriage, won a Best Article of the Year award from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education in 2006. My piece on Chicago's softball sub-culture, "Diamonds in the Rough," was a finalist for a Chicago Headline Club Lisagor Award. I am the author of "The Elmhurst University Jazz Festival," a full-length history of that annual event. I have also published more than 70 books for young readers, most of them on topics related to American history.
