Cindi Andrews is senior news director at IndyStar, a newsroom that delivers local journalism Indianapolis readers can find nowhere else. As the No. 2 editor, she oversees the daily operation of the news, investigative and digital teams, challenging and supporting them to do their best work. She is dedicated to building a staff that's reflective of the region's diversity and directing coverage that does the same.As a newsroom leader, Cindi is guided by three overarching principles: o Support employees in their professional growth and work-life balance.o Give our audience/community what they want and need.o Hold the powerful to account.Prior to her move to the Pulitzer Prize-winning IndyStar, Cindi led the Evansville (Indiana) Courier & Press and oversaw all of Gannett's southern Indiana newsrooms. She cranked up the ambition level of Evansville's already talented newsroom and led investigative coverage of the county justice system. The stories contributed to an upset primary loss for the incumbent prosecutor and a judge's retirement as well as winning state and companywide awards. She also refocused the newsroom on audience-centered work. Cindi's journalism career goes back much further -- to high school, in fact -- and has continued unabated apart from a five-year hiatus (2007-12). She began her professional life hunting down mistakes in others' stories as a copy editor. Cindi's decade as a reporter and writer mostly centered on government and politics beats, with forays into business/real estate and general assignment. Scoops, database reporting, high-level enterprise and storytelling were all part of her repertoire. The Ohio native's management journey began with her appointment as the Enquirer's opinion engagement editor in 2014. Cindi amplified local voices that had traditionally been all but unheard on the editorial pages -- particularly Black, LGBT+ and young voices. She also expanded engagement, particularly on social media and via in-person events such as candidate debates, community forums and reader meet-and-greets.Amid a newsroom reorganization, Cindi was briefly Enquirer business editor before leading a newly created investigative and enterprise team. The lure of the Rocky Mountains led to a stint as senior editor/politics at the Denver Post, where hallmarks of her tenure included increasing community engagement, reintroducing a politics newsletter and strengthening media partnerships.
