I have one characteristic, that some might call a flaw, but one that I think makes me a good industrial designer and advocate for product consumers. That is, I have a very low threshold of tolerance for product use or user interface obfuscation. If I can't figure out how to use something in less than a minute or two, I get angry, curse a bit and move on to something else. I certainly don't buy those products and I'm reluctant to consider investigating that brand's offerings again. If I can't figure out how to use something quickly - and I'm not that slow of a study - then I can't expect much of the general population to get it quickly either. Products should be designed to communicate how they are to be used through many visual clues via shapes, colors, graphics and display interface graphics that anticipate the lowest common denominator of user perception. I must call myself one of those lowest common denominator guys whose low expectation sensibility helps me design products that communicate their use more clearly to consumers. I call that an advantage.
