A spinal injury in 1983 left me a wheelchair user. For twenty years I waited in hope that the wheelchair industry would one day design a cool, stylish wheelchair that was less medical device and more desirable technology. Through out a long career in TV production I knew if the industry didn't make better, more efficient, more attractive wheelchairs then I would do it myself. The industry continued to turn out re-branded tired technology year after year. In 2007 I left my job at Sky TV to re-design the wheelchair, Carbon Black is the result a fully carbon fibre, bespoke wheelchair made by F1 engineers in the UK. www.carbonblacksystem.comWith funding from Scottish Enterprise, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and more recently private investors Carbon Black is a reality on sale in the UK. In the same way carbon prosthetic limbs have changed perceptions towards amputees and artificial limbs Carbon Black is changing perceptions for wheelchair users and wheelchairs.
