Andrew WalthoB.App.Sc. (Hons1), FAIG, RPGeo, FAusIMM, FGS, Prof. Member SME, GAICD.I'm committed to turning ideas into innovative, sustainable solutions and improvement opportunities.Strengths: Innovator, ethical, enquiring, reliable.Values: learning, teamwork, team building, trust, respect.I have more than 40 years of experience spanning multiple commodities, deposit styles, and settings.I have extensive experience in bridging gaps between professionals across the full suite of disciplines in our modern, technologically advanced resource industries, developed through operational experience including deep involvement in the development of major mining operations extending from early exploration to production and closure. This enables me to understand the scope and timing of geological information required by other professionals engaged in projects. I have also actively participated in due diligence reviews associated with both potential acquisitions and divestments, and preparing geological material for independent expert reports and valuations.Mt broad commodity experience includes lithium and other battery materials, gold, base metals, nickel, copper, uranium, potash, industrial minerals, heavy mineral sands and REE gained both in Australia and overseas. In recent years, I have been deeply involved in project generation, exploration, resource and economic assessment of battery materials and commodities for which demand could develop due to the adoption of new energy storage and transmission technologies and adoption of novel metal alloys by industry.I have a keen interest in identifying, quantifying and managing geological and resource risk. This has led to an interest in exploration and resource evaluation technology, with a focus on adapting and sharing appropriate technologies across geological disciplines. I am committed to resource stewardship which is an increasingly critical consideration in all stages of project development. I consider these principles essential in raising community recognition of geoscience and mining professions, and resources industries in general. I'm currently a mentor in AIG’s early career geoscientist mentoring program.Outside work, I'm a keen landscape, portrait and wildlife photographer, enjoy mountain bike riding, travelling with my family, and reading for relaxation.

Chief Geoscientist - Energy And MineralsRio Tinto Jun 2012 - May 2021London, Greater London, GbProfessionally and technically challenging role, responsible for the energy, diamonds and minerals portfolios within the Exploration Project Generation Group. This role focussed on identifying and assessing new exploration opportunities to be pursued by Rio Tinto Exploration as well as supporting commercial teams engaged in M&A activities and provision of specialist technical support to product groups and operations. Work focussed on battery materials including lithium and "new commodities" for which future demand will be created by new technologies, particularly due to changes to energy generation, storage and transmission systems, or the innovative use of metals in new products. New opportunities in diamonds, potash and industrial minerals were also part of my team's responsibilities. Innovation was a key component of the role which involved examining how opportunities created by new technologies, or adapting technologies from other industries, could create new demand for commodities and how minerals processing technologies may unlock stalled and stranded projects. Key to this work was fostering engagement between exploration, product groups, operations and business development teams within the company. I led a small, global and diverse team reporting to an Exploration Director, with broader, informal reporting lines associated with specific projects. My team was highly effective at promoting, implementing and embedding improvements in project execution and technical practices designed to reduce resource risks by influencing project teams rather than by exercising authority. Most recently, I was closely and directly involved in the improvement of resource evaluation practices, geological models and resource estimates for the Jadar lithium project in Serbia. -
