My father introduced me to computers at an early age. I remember bugging him to type his magical commands into the DOS terminal so that I could play a game. In middle school I learned to make web pages in Microsoft FrontPage and soon started to tinker with the magical code that lived under the hood. Many years, a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, and several jobs later, I'm still interested in getting a taste of that magic that makes things tick.I've lived in Hilo Hawaii since the age of 2, and I've been fortunate to be able to stay here through all of my schooling and professional career up to this point. Through all of this time I've become very accustomed to working remotely and the unique challenges and benefits it offers.I'm really big on web technology and where it's going. I've always appreciated the incredible freedom and flexibility of the web. It works everywhere, it's always up to date, and it's relatively safe and secure. I continue to be surprised by all of the things you can pull off using web technologies and the ever growing ecosystem of technologies that continue to make these things increasingly more powerful.I like to be useful. I get a kick out of making that new tool that saves me 30 seconds of work every day, and then being able to share that with others to hopefully improve their experience as well. I like to solve problems. I believe in doing things "the right way" when we know what that is, and conversely I think small neglects add up over time to create downward spirals. I believe that collaboration requires trust and social capital and that building and sustaining those relationships comes first. Having "the right answer" means nothing if nobody wants to join you.

Web DeveloperLight Bridge Studio Dec 2014 - May 2016I was the primary web developer for Home Depot's Careers site (http://careers.homedepot.com) as a contractor with Light Bridge Studio (http://ltbrdg.com)Working closely with our designer, I constructed several new designs for the site (in HTML/CSS/JS) for different marketing campaigns, redesigns, etc. I also managed/maintained any back-end PHP, libraries, etc. I refactored a lot of the pre-existing code (back end, layouts, frameworks, etc). The site has more recently been migrated to a wordpress site (which I had no part in).I also did some work on the ltbrdg.com and chadbishop.com websites: largely backend updates, etc.

Software DeveloperTass Usa (Formerly Hawaii Tass) Jun 2013 - Nov 2015I've been working with Hawaii TASS on several different client's projects. I've been working on lots of different stuff but mostly web related projects, database work, theme work, etc. I've also been working on Android Apps. Additionally, I've been helping to coordinate working with a remote team spread around the world (Washington, Texas, and Bangladesh mostly).Much of my web work uses Drupal 7, since it's where I have the most experience, and it allows me to provide the most easy to use interface for clients while reducing cost and development time.More recently I've been using the Laravel PHP Framework. I decided to use Laravel because I knew it would allow me to control the database Schema more directly, and it provides a clean object oriented MVC interface for generating API endpoints. It basically allows me to control everything more explicitly, rather than relying on Drupal to handle things for me in it's own way. It's also faster, more lightweight, better for version control, and easier to deploy to multiple servers (dev/live). I like Laravel quite a lot.

Researcher/Software DeveloperResearch Corporation Of The University Of Hawaii Mar 2010 - Dec 2013Honolulu, Hi, UsI've worked with a small team of developers on several different projects primarily focused around Drupal 6 and more recently Drupal 7. The team has changed several times, and our focus has shifted from time to time. The original team primarily consisted of David Kimball (our supervisor/mentor), Mike Purvis (skilled programmer, fellow student, and friend), and myself. We toiled away for several semesters building from the ground up, a system build on Drupal 6 that is specifically designed to aide in the collection of information regarding the actions of individuals under the purview of our state's EPSCoR grant. This grant spans several campuses on several of the Hawaiian islands. We designed the system to help administrators collect the necessary information from everyone involved, then compile the information into useful reports, etc. The site also serves as a means for researchers to publish information about what they are working on, making that information more available to the world.See: http://epscor.hawaii.edu/More recently, our team has expanded, and we have shifted gears into designing a new system built on Drupal 7. These EPSCoR grants exist in other states as well, and the other states have to deal with the same kind of statistics and reports. It was brought to the attention of some of these other states that we have built up this system that is helping us collect this data, so the decision was made to start on a new, more generic system that could be used by any EPSCoR state that is interested in using our system. Our team expanded to include several new developers from other states: Rusty Keele (Utah), Chris Allen (New Mexico), Jeannine Haney (Alaska), Brent Sadler (New Hampshire), and Pablo Laight (also New Mexico). There are many other people involved in this process that I have not mentioned, but these are the people that I primarily work with. -
InternTextron Systems 2010 - 2010Haslet, Texas, UsI learned python while working on a large python script that manipulates huge quantities (terabytes) of researcher's images. I rewrote the entire script, reusing only one or two functions. The software first indexes the images into a SQLite database, filing them into a taxonomy based on metadata about where the image can be found and what it is looking at. The images are then processed in several ways including error corrections, scaling, etc. Then the software produces multiple products including key images from different 'series' as well as collages and pdf documents. -
